Greetings from PA
Updated: Feb 28, 2019
Priestman Architects (PA) had a great Year of the Dog and now look forward to working closely with you from our strong base to develop further in the Year of the Pig! We have been busy with varieties of new and interesting projects, as well continuing with our previous ones and other activities within the community. The following are a few examples:
We are delighted that our hospital project is well on its way. It is very interesting to be working on this major large project. We are also collaborating with the master planners on a 2 sqkm project.
In February we started the masterplan, followed by architectural projects for the Yele Wilderness Park project in Mianning County, Sichuan. We have now completed the architectural design for the main entrance gate, which serves also as a centre for the visitors (Mountain Forest Pasture Gate) for the park. It reflects the stunning surrounding scenery. It is due to start construction after the Chinese New Year ends. We have also designed the Arts Centre, hotel, activities centre and the village.
At the same time we were invited by the New Open Corporation to renovate its existing building and design the fun park in Nanhu, Chongqing. The project aims to create a dynamic, chromatic plaza and an educational roof-top garden for teenagers.
Chengdu Shuangfeng and Weilai Park
Among many other active commissions and projects, we entered and won two competition for public parks in Chengdu. The larger one is proposed as a 3-dimensional park, with artificial hills built from re-cycled materials from demolished buildings from Chengdu.
Of-course we are delighted to celebrate some of the projects that are now built. After numerous design studies, the culturally sensitive DongShuiYi Village serving HuGuangHuiGuan Hall was completed and successfully occupied at the beginning of the Year of the Dog. We were commissioned to design for the new WuYu hotel, which is intricately inserted into the 6th floor garden podium of the JiuLongPo WanXiangCheng. The concept here, is, once inside, the garden is visible from most angles. We also designed and over saw the construction completed for the important LiangJiang International Hub project for GaoKe and the LiangJiang New Zone.
Our smallest and long lasting project, the 6 room Nanshan Minsu (home-stay) overlooking the unspoilt forest and landscape is also completed now.
Aside from projects, we co-organised and collaborated with UNSW Art and Design, Sydney University and Sichuan Fine Art Institute on our fourth mad.lab multi-disciplinary design Program. There were over 50 participating students and 5 tutors from the three universities. The outcome was exciting and successful.
RIBA & Public Speaking
Meanwhile Matthew Priestman continues as the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) representative for SW China. He was one the founding members of the RIBA Hong Kong Chapter and remains as a committee member. He is also a member of the RIBA All China committee and a Director of the education arm of the RIBA in the Pacific region.
Matthew Priestman has also been lecturing and speaking in Chongqing, Hong Kong, London and Barcelona. He also has started a practice based research PhD through the University of Westminster, London.
Matthew was RIBA International Awards jury member reviewing the XiaoJinWan University by Foster & Partners, near Shenzhen and also the GuangMing Village House project near ZhaoTong in Yunnan by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Ludian earthquake of August 2014 killed over 600 people and destroyed most of the rammed earth buildings in the village. This inspiring small project demonstrated modern and safer rammed earth construction techniques that are culturally relevant, involving locally trained labour and - crucially - are more economical to build.
Later in the year, Matthew was commissioned by the pre-eminent Architectural Review magazine (AR) to review for a potential international award, the Shuanghe Village Library project in a village also near ZhaoTong, which was hit by another devastating earthquake in 2012. Matthew was invited to be a speaker at the Sustainable Urban Renewal International Forum of Landscape City at the well respected bridge design company T.Y Lin International China in Chongqing. Matthew was one of the speakers, at the invitation of Chongqing University for the First Sino-British Ageing Innovation International Forum. In UK, Matthew represented the RIBA, gave speeches at the First China-UK Human Settlement & Environment Forum in Cambridge University and at Highgrove, Prince Charles country residence, UK.
PA is fortunate to be involved in so many challenging and important public facing projects and activities, and sincerely thank our clients, friends, collaborators and colleagues for their support.
Together we can contribute to better and healthier places to live.
Thank you Dog Year,
Happy Pig Year!
